Traditional PNGtuber Rigs
(For programs like, HONK!, Veadotube mini or Gazo Tuber)
The Rig consists of 4 PNG images:
Closed Mouth, Open Mouth, Blink Closed Mouth, Blink Open Mouth

They can also be animated gif images, on average something like:
Closed mouth (PNG), Talking Mouth (GIF),
animated Blink Closed Mouth (GIF), animated Blink Open Mouth (GIF)

Its also possible to animate more frames on the closed mouth or talking mouth frames to incorporate loop animations, including hands or other aspects of the body showing more animation. considering the 4 images you are limited to, more complicated animations are not recommended.

a major downfall to veadotube mini is that it uses the unity engine,
which is known to be terrible with transparent png and gifs

leaving a strange fuzzy blur around the image.
Veadotube leaves a fuzzy outline around the image

Advanced PNGtuber Rigs
sAMMI Core + OBS & move transition

Using SAMMI to program the Blinks and Exeldro's Move Transition plug-in to control the mouth movements, This type of rig is already capable of doing anything the traditional PNGtuber Rigs can do.
However you can take it a step further and have SAMMI control hands, torso, feet, etC. with triggers and buttons that manipulate nested scenes setup in OBS. you also have the option to have more layers, and the control to keep the mouths separate from the eyes.
Custom Sammi Deck for PNGtuber
So you start with a blank head
Blank Head for nesting in OBS scenes
Then nest the faces on top, giving the character a fluent look and leaving transitions seamless.

the results are a MUCH cleaner Rig THEN THE TRADITIONAL PNGtuber Rigs, with only your imagination limiting you on what can be achieved.

I recommend researching Sammi to see if this is the route for you.
of course i do mix in a lot of Traditional Animation into my rigs to help give them that 2d animated feel. the more frames the more fluent the animation,
regardless of which type of PNGtuber Rig you choose.

i strive for the level of Super Friends ('73 - '85) or Family Guy.

not considered by animators the best that animation has to offer, some tend to find it lazy. However for this type of
Live Animation, i personally find that level very pleasing.
The goal is to bridge the gap between
Vtubers (
live2dCubisium) & PNGtubers.

Because some want more of that Traditional 2D animation look, that you can't get from Vtubing unless you are using Adobe Character Animator,
which has a monthly price tag of $60 to operate.
